Anne Carson - Nobel Prizewinner, former International Hellenic Prizewinner

Anne Carson has recently made headlines for winning the Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 ‘for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature. This comes as no surprise to the committee of the International Hellenic Prize, who in 2012 (under its previous styling, the John D. Criticos Hellenic Prize) awarded the Prize to Anne Carson for her work Antigonick, introducing the author to a wider Hellenic audience within Greece, London, and across the Greek diaspora. Carson’s oeuvre is threaded through with a prominent line of works that showcase and rework Hellenic myths and literature, reflecting her longstanding love of ancient Greek, and a career in classical studies. Antigonick provides an innovative artistic reimagining of the Sophoclean tragedy, marking Carson’s first foray into multimedia translation, alternating text blocks hand-inked onto the page with original illustrations on translucent vellum pages (created by artist Bianca Stone). The IHP is overjoyed to see Carson’s visionary work validated on the global stage, and deeply proud of their own committee members who recognized the author’s enduring talent over a decade ago.
